Saints 2 Newcastle 0 From St Helens Star
Hello, and welcome to the Daily Echo's blog covering this afternoon's Premier League contest between Saints and Newcastle, at St Mary's. It's the return of Alan Pardew, who is back at the Under Armour Cross Training Shoes Womens stadium for the first time since being sacked as Southampton boss in August 2010. Pardew leads his injury and suspension hit Magpies team into town, hoping to find a result that could ignite their season. After finishing fifth last term, it has been a disappointing start to the season for Newcastle, who are currently in 14th position and without a win in their last five games across all competitions. For second bottom Saints, a win today would lift them above Reading and Aston Villa, taking them out of the relegation zone. It is Nigel Adkins' men who possess the momentum going into this one, having won their crucial basement battle with QPR last week, a result that triggered the sacking of Mark Hughes at Loftus Road and ensured Adkins strengthened his position at St Mary's. Stay with us throughout the afternoon for the build up, team news and match updates.
We just didn't see eye to eye. There was no nastiness in there, he just didn't want me as his manager and I think that was obviously coming through to me. I had a great relationship with the fans though and our performances were strong bearing in mind we had minus ten points and didn't really have a starting XI when I arrived.
I was close (to going there). They are a good a side but I chose Southampton because it was closer to where I live. It's where I preferred to come. I didn't get a chance to speak to Alan Pardew. Southampton just appealed to me more. They've got good facilities here, the way they play football has been good and I was promised first choice football. I thought I was going to get more game time, which I have been getting, so I am pleased. I have no regrets about coming here. I have been playing a lot of games for the club and that's what I like. I didn't really want to be on the bench. I just wanted to be playing, getting game time and improving as a player.
we were 10 points and we built a side. It will be interesting to meet a few of the people there who I had great relationships with. There are some great players there who have done phenomenally well. Rickie Lambert, who I took to the club, I am so proud of him. I always said he could be a Premier League player and he is proving it. (Adam) Lallana and (Jose) Fonte, people like that, and Kelvin (Davis), it will be nice to see those guys who are still in and around the team. They have made the transition well. They have acquitted themselves very well and are unlucky not to have won against the Manchester clubs on both occasions. I signed (Lambert) at 28 from Bristol Rovers. Plenty had talked about him, but no one went for him. I paid 1m for him and I said I thought he could take us to the Premier League, and he has proved me right, so I am pleased about that.
NEWCASTLE SQUAD NEWS: Nigel Adkins might not have any concerns when it comes to his squad, but Alan Pardew certainly does. Midfielder Cheick Tiote returns after missing out on Thursday's Europa League draw with Maritimo through suspension, but there are a host of absentees for the visitors. Skipper Fabricio Coloccini is serving the last match of a three game domestic ban and will join influential winger Hatem Ben Arfa (hamstring) and midfielder Yohan Cabaye (groin) on the sidelines. Striker Shola Ameobi (groin) and midfielder Gabriel Obertan (toe) remain doubts. Winger Jonas Gutierrez (knee) and utility man James Perch (thigh) are available, while striker Papiss Cisse has a chance of playing despite picking up a kick on the thigh against Maritimo. Fellow frontman Nile Ranger, who used to be on the books at Saints, has been added to the squad.

I enjoyed my time there and I am looking forward to going back. There will be some memories because we won a trophy when I was there and Under Armour Curry 3 Zero Gold
