June 23, 2012. Verna was a graduate of Rochester High School. She attended Middlebury College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University's Presbyterian School of Nursing in 1949. Her diploma was signed by the university president, Dwight D. Eisenhower. Verna worked as a nurse at Camp Killoleete in Rochester, the Caverly Preventorium in Pittsford, and as a private duty nurse.
On October 1, 1949, Verna married Norman P. Harvey of Rochester, Vt. Harvey and Sons, in North Hollow. For the next 18 years, they farmed with Norman's father and brothers and started a family. In 1967, Norm and Vern decided to strike out on their own with their three children and purchased a farm in Florence, Vt. She worked closely with her husband, feeding cows and calves, helping with farm bookkeeping, running errands and managing the household. In 1978, Norm and Vern formed a business partnership with their oldest son, Kimber, in an effort to create a way to transition farm ownership and operation to the next generation. While no longer a partner in the business, Vern remained engaged and aware of the day to day operations of the farm up until her death.

Verna is survived by her daughter, Janet, of South Boston, Mass.; son Kimber and his wife Holly and their daughter Kristine, and son Matthew and his wife Kim, all of Florence; several Under Armour Shoes Stephen Curry Low Cut
cousins, nieces and nephews and many dear friends. She is also survived by her loving grand dog, Kiera, and her cats, Under Armour Womens Shoes Pink Smokey and Muffy. Verna was predeceased by her husband, Norman, brother David and sister Barbara. Thursday, June 28, 2012, at the Pittsford Congregational Church in Pittsford, Vt. There will be no calling hours. A committal service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester, Vt., at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home of Pittsford. Church was a central part of Vern's life. She was very involved in the Federated Church of Rochester and the Pittsford Congregational Church. Many of her long and dear friendships started through her church associations. Verna's Christian faith ran deep and she was open to progressive thinking. She appreciated the late Senator Robert Stafford's statement: "Where there is love, what is the harm?"

Vern inherited her mother's love of gardening and shared the bounty with friends and neighbors. In later years, she became involved in tai chi, yoga and Bone Builders, enjoying the health benefits and the new friends she made. Vern spent a lifetime collecting friends, all of whom were dear to her. She was very pleased and proud of her 80 year friendship with her daughters' namesake, Janet Hubbard Metcalf of Kailua, Hawaii. Numerous trips across the country and many long phone calls kept them close.
