newspapers were converted from hardcopy to microfilm, to digital files, which are now available to the public online. The Poly archive is available online through the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Digital Collections, and can be searched by date or keyword.
The paper began as a monthly tabloid style paper, and went through many changes before becoming the broadsheet color product that is circulated weekly on RPI campus now. The paper, which started as The Polytechnic, has seen about 10 different titles throughout the years and is currently The Rensselaer Polytechnic.
Polytechnic and more than 41,000 individual pages were digitized in the decade long process. The digital files required an expansion of 1.1 terabytes and the entire project cost more than $30,000.
In 2001, the fragile newspapers were preserved on microfilm. Then, 41 reels of microfilm were scanned by Hudson Microimaging using optical character recognition so the text can be searched online. However, ss part of the next phase of the endeavor, staff of the Institute Archives is currently working to acquire pdf files to add the most recent issues of The Poly since 2002 that were produced digitally.
The project was partially kick started by alumni requests. such an important resource for our researchers, said Institute archivist Tammy Gobert, who spearheaded the digitization project. This is one of many digitization projects that the institute is working on.

The oldest issues available are from 1869, an effort that ceased after one semester. The paper began regular publication in 1885 and is still being produced by students today.
Looking through the site, one can find a cornucopia of news stories throughout the years, including student reaction to the first women enrolled as students, presidential visits including Nixon and Kennedy, and major milestones in the world of RPI sports.
