TROY Over 75 children came out to learn how to live and play safely Saturday at the second annual Neighborhood Children's Safety Day held at Powers Park. The event took place at the bi weekly flea market organized by Pastor Willie Bacote of the Missing Link Street Ministry/Feed A Kid Program and Jim Gordon of the North Lansingburgh Neighborhood Watch.
"We're very happy with how everything turned out," said Bacote. "It was a great event, even better than last year, and we can't wait to do it again next year." About 60 children participated in last year's program, according to Gordon.
Children and parents were very engaged and responsive to the event. Gordon said that over 50 bike helmets were given away to children by the Troy Police Department and about 30 took advantage of the ID cards. "The line was half a block long of kids just waiting to sit in the front seat of the fire truck," said Gordon, who added that the event is a way to make the community aware of services provided by the city. "We need to bridge the gap between public service agencies and the kids and the community. We want to show people what they have to offer."

"He's doing some really great things for the kids," said one vendor. "We're happy to be involved."
The Sheriff's Department provided photo ID cards with fingerprint and biographical data for children under the age of 18 as part of the Operation SAFE CHILD program that helps to find missing children. The Troy Fire Department presented tips on fire prevention and what to do in case of an emergency, and brought a fire engine for the kids to tour. "Everything we do goes to the kids," said Bacote, who added that the program has fed children ages three to 15 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays every week for the past two years. Flea market vendors pay a fee to Bacote that supports the work of the ministry, which along with the Feed A Kid program includes a gun buyback program that has collected over 300 firearms.

The most popular for the kids, at least was the fire engine.
"As long as it keeps getting such a great response, we're definitely going to keep doing it," said Gordon.
Both Gordon and Bacote said that they intend to keep the event going next year.
Gordon said that partnering with Bacote allowed them to take advantage of the location and built in crowd, but also made sense because of both organizations' work in the community.
